William Vincent Hass, 94, passed away Friday, January 25, 2013 at Riverview Health Services, Flandreau. William was born on June 23, 1918, to Carl and Pauline (Braun) Hass in rural Wentworth, SD and grew up on farms in the area. He attended Franklin grade school and high school and from there he went on to South Dakota State University and received a bachelor and master's degree. William began his career in education in Farmer, SD where he was a teacher and coach. It was here he met his future wife, Winifred Hayden. They were married on July 29, 1943, in Sioux Falls, SD and first lived in Chester, SD where he was an administrator and coach, taking his boys' basketball team to the state tournament. They had six children and in 1951 they moved to Flandreau where he served as principal of the high school until his retirement in 1981. Winifred passed away on November 10, 1989 and William later married Frances Halverson who passed away on September 4, 2004. In his free time Bill was an avid golfer and bridge player and he enjoyed the title of champion pinochle player in the family.
William is survived by three sons, William C. (Debbie), Manhattan Beach, CA, Donald, Flandreau, Michael, Folsom, CA; three daughters, Jean Wood, Mt. Vernon, IL, Kathy (Grant) Anderson, Le Center, MN, Bette (Pete) Osman, Redmond, WA; eight grandchildren, Amanda and Alex Black, Christian and Tara (Vig) Anderson, Hayden and Stephanie Hass, Kelly (Rink) and Katie Osman, and Allison and Griffin Hass; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both wives, his parents, a sister Mildred and a brother Carl.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, February 1, 2013 at Skroch Funeral Chapel with burial in Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is from 4:00 – 8:00 pm Thursday at the funeral chapel.
