Warren Dennis Schmidt was born on November 25, 1939, on a farm northwest of Dell Rapids, SD to Leo and Frances (Burkard) Schmidt. The oldest of three children, he grew up alongside his siblings Gerald and Lois; helping on the farm in Colman where the family moved to in 1942, and attending Allen Country School. He graduated from Colman High School in 1957.
Following graduation, Warren continued to work on the family farm before entering basic training in 1958. On September 23, 1961, he married the love of his life, Jan (Janice) Wosje. Shortly after, he was called to duty during the Berlin Crisis and was stationed at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. In 1962, he was honorably discharged, and the couple returned to the family farm to begin the next chapter of their lives.
Warren and Jan were blessed with five children: Rodney, Randy, Robert, Ronald, and Rochelle. Alongside farming, Warren also worked as a salesman for Archer Oil.
After retiring from farming in 1997, Warren and Jan moved to town, where he continued to stay busy as a handyman for St. Peter Catholic Church and for many in the community.
Warren was a dedicated member of the Colman American Legion, St. Peter Catholic Church, and served on the Colman Township Board.
Throughout his life he enjoyed attending auctions, playing cards, bingo nights at the Dell Rapids Legion, and watching NASCAR.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Frances Schmidt; in-laws, Rueben and Hazel Wosje; two sisters-in-law; and two nieces.
