Waldo L. Simons, 85, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at his home in Sioux Falls. Waldo was born at Flandreau on October 8, 1925 to Walter and Stella (Scarvie) Simons. He was educated in Simons Country School and graduated from Egan High School in 1943. He attended mechanic school and returned to farming NW of Flandreau with his dad. Waldo entered the army on Aug. 31, 1944 until his discharge on July 7, 1946. He returned home and continued to farm and drove semi truck for AL Storer and Norman Johnson until he retired. Waldo then moved to live with his sister, Arla, SE of Flandreau until they moved to Sioux Falls in August 2007.
Waldo is survived by 2 sisters: Arla Ailts, Sioux Falls, and Audrey (John) Zwingelberg, Whitewood, SD; 15 nieces and nephews: Gurine Ailts, Kevin Ailts, Rhonda VanLeur, Rolayne Wiest, Blaine Ailts, Gerald "Steve" Ailts, Daron Ailts, Julie Westberg, Janelle Arehart, David Zwingelberg, Rick Zwingelberg, Holly Ailts, Heidi Aldren, Scott Zwingelberg and Kathy Karas; many great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Gerald Ailts.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Flandreau with burial in Lone Rock Cemetery, Flandreau. Visitation begins at 12 noon Saturday at the church.
