Vivian Brave "Wanahca To ka he Hinapah Win", First Flower Comes Out Woman made her journey to the spirit world February 25, 2014. She was born September 24, 1928 in White River, SD to Joshua and Blanche (Jandreau) Standing Elk. Vivian attended Chamberlain Indian School. She married Aloysious Thin Elk and together they had eight children. She was an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and was employed as a Community Health Representative with her tribe. She also worked as a Health Aide at White River Nursing Home. She moved to Flandreau, SD in 1985. She was employed at Riverview Manor for many years until she retired. Vivian's hobbies include watching TV, "Duck Dynasty", her favorite show, beadwork, word search puzzles, sewing and baking. She is known for her fry bread throughout Indian Country. She enjoyed pow-wows, at one time she was in traditional shawl dance. She attended sun dances and loved her Native traditions and spiritual ways. She was devoted to her family and loved all of her takojas/grandchildren. Vivian was a friend to all.

Vivian is survived by her children: Elvira Tubby, Choctaw, MS, Helen (Nate) Nickey, Flandreau, Gene Thin Elk, Vermillion, SD, LaVon Duechar, Flandreau, Calvin Thin Elk, Lake Andes, SD, Alvin Thin Elk, Flandreau, one brother Darrell Standing Elk and two sisters, Violet Medicine Bear and Alvena Standing Elk, both of White River, SD, 29 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Aloysious Thin Elk, father Joshua Standing Elk, mother Blanche Standing Elk, two sons, Lorenzo Thin Elk and Everette Thin Elk and grandson Sean Tubby.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Eastman Hall, Flandreau, with burial in First Presbyterian Cemetery. Two day wake service begins 5:00 pm Thursday at Eastman Hall with 7:00 pm prayer service both Thursday and Friday.
