Virginia M. Holmlund, 96, of Brookings, SD passed away Saturday, December 7, 2019 at the Brookings Health System, Brookings. Virginia was born May 27, 1923 at Canby, MN to Einar and Mabel (Kompelien) Gudmundson. She graduated from Canby High School in 1941. Virginia married Robert Holmlund on June 1, 1945 at Canby. They lived in Canby until 1952 when they moved to Elkton, SD. Bob and Virginia had eight foster children and foreign exchange students live with them over the years. They became residents at Greenleaf Assisted Living in Brookings in 2003 and Bob preceded her in death on February 4, 2005. Virginia was a former member of United Church of Elkton. Throughout her life, Virginia enjoyed fishing, cooking, baking, sewing and many crafts.

Virginia is survived by her sister, Marilyn (Larry) Stoltenberg, Rapid City, SD and niece and nephews: Rebecca (William) Wilken, Eagan, MN; Roger (Patty) Gudmundson, Ramsey, MN; Brian (Patty) Reipke, Clarksville, TN; Brad (Shelly) Reipke, Glen Allen, VA; Lester and Jerilyn Kramer and family who were her local Elkton family and Lila Unruh Clark, Watertown. . She was preceded in death by her parents Einar and Mabel Gudmundson, Canby, MN; sister, Eileen (George) Hanson, Canby, MN and brother Waldo (Leona) Gudmundson, Canby, MN. The family would like to express their appreciation for the exceptional and loving care provided by the Estelline Nursing Home and Edgewood Assisted Living, Brookings.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday at United Parish of Elkton with burial in the Canby City Cemetery, Canby, MN. Visitation is 5:00 – 7:00 pm Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Elkton.
