Virgil was born October 1, 1931 in Moody County, SD to George and Alice (Walder) Strenge. He received his education in a Moody County country school. He started farming with his father and was married to Grace Mullett on September 10, 1950 at Wellman Methodist Church, rural Colman, SD. They farmed north of Colman, retiring from farming in 2005. Virgil was a dealer for Funks Seeds for several years. His wife preceded him in death on April 12, 2009. Virgil raised Hampshire hogs, Angus cattle, enjoyed hunting, loved music, playing cards and was an avid roller skater. He became a resident at Riverview Health Services in May 2009.

Virgil is survived by three children, Verlyn (Merry), Clearbrook, MN, Virtus (Mary Jo), rural Colman, Vickie (Pat) Alschlager, rural Colman, seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Grace, special granddaughter Valerie and his parents.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00-7:00 pm Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at the chapel.
