Thomas G. Schmidt, 58, died Monday at his home in Flandreau. He was born October 14, 1949 in Dell Rapids, SD to Harold and Ann (Gitchell) Schmidt. He graduated from Flandreau High School in 1967 and then attended the University of South Dakota. After school he went to work with his father for International Harvester in Flandreau. Tom married Rita Rosheim Baker on October 26, 1989 in Flandreau. He later owned and operated NAPA Auto Parts in Flandreau. In his spare time, Tom enjoyed slow-pitch softball, golfing, playing cards and dice at the Flandreau Cafe and Corner Cafe, following his beloved New York Yankees, USD Coyotes and Indianapolis Colts. Tom was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church.


Tom is survived by four daughters, Jacque (Brent) Headrick, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Kim Schmidt, Flandreau, Ashley (Nick) Podhradsky, Madison, SD, and Nicole Haddad, Austin, TX; three granddaughters, Paige and Hope Headrick, and Ruthann Schmidt; one brother, Mike (Jani) Schmidt, Jacksonville, FL; three sisters, Patricia (Tom) West, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Jane (David) Mydland, Sioux Falls, and Joan (Craig) Severtson, Flandreau; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rita, and his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Thursday at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 pm Wednesday at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
