Shirley Smithlin, 87, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Good Samaritan Village, Sioux Falls. She was born September 19, 1926 in Hot Springs, SD to John and Nellie (Pond) Hatch. She attended country school in Fall River County. After school, Shirley married David Benton in 1941 and Ben Herrera in 1952. She moved to Sioux Falls in 1955 and worked as a senior companion in Sioux Falls for many years. Shirley married Gerald Smithlin in 1973. She enjoyed spending time with her kids and grandkids. Shirley loved being a grandma. She also loved taking pictures, especially of her family, and cooking and feeding her family.

Grateful for sharing her life are three daughters, Ellen (Marv) Finch, Port Angeles, WA, Sidney (Lyle) Fenicle, Sioux Falls, Bennie Borstad, Cheyenne, WY, 13 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and daughter-in-law Ardis Benton, Flandreau. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, 2 daughters, Betty, Esther, 2 sons, Harv and Dave, 1 granddaughter Linda, 1 daughter-in-law Jeanne, her parents and grandparents.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation will begin one hour before the service at the chapel.
