Royal C. Grindeland, Sr., 73, died Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Flandreau Medical Center. Royal was born June 26, 1937 on the family farm near Canby, MN to Rudolph and Frieda (Thompson) Grindeland. He received his education in Sioux Falls. Royal was very happily married to the love of his life, Ilse Kondert, on November 2, 1957 in Sioux Falls, SD. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958 at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Royal was a mechanical genius, inventor, a "Jack of All Trades" and could fix anything. He loved his cars, his dog, Spike, going out for breakfast and enjoyed wood carving. Most of all, Royal loved his family, especially his wife, Ilse.
Royal is survived by his wife, Ilse; three children, Royal Grindeland, Jr., Colman, SD, Cindy (Brian) Walberg, Dell Rapids, SD, and Becky (Keith) Fricke, Flandreau, SD. He also loved his nine grandchildren, Joshua (Emily) Gulbrandson, Danielle (Jesse) Rick, Kaitlyn Walberg, Gabrielle and Royal "the III" Grindeland, Keith Michael, Konstance, Paloma and Eliana Fricke. He was going to be blessed with his first great-grandson this Christmas, Kaden Royal Rick. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Frieda Grindeland.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday at the Trent Baptist Church with visitation preceding the service at the church. Burial will be in East Highland Cemetery, Brandt, SD.
