Ronald J. Conkling, 89, of Flandreau, SD, passed away Friday, May 1, 2020 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls. Ron was born September 15, 1930 at Omaha, NE to John and Marian (Larsen) Conkling. He grew up in Lake Preston, SD and graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1948. Ron graduated from SDSU School of Pharmacy in 1953. He entered the U.S. Army on June 16, 1953 serving during the Korean War until May 18, 1955. After his discharge, Ron got his first job as a pharmacist in Faith, SD in 1955. Later that year he moved to Flandreau and worked at Heiertz Rexall Drug and the Flandreau Clinic Pharmacy. Ron married Rachel Conkling on October 1, 1960 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Flandreau. He retired in 2000 and they continued to live in Flandreau. Ron was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, American Legion, VFW, Flier Booster Club, Crystal Theatre Board, Flandreau Improvement Board and the Flandreau Park Golf Club.
Ron is survived by two half-brothers, Dan Conkling and John Conkling, both of Yankton, SD; brother-in-law Charles (Betty) Tanck, Sioux Falls; sister-in-law Mary Tanck, Kansas City, MO; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his wife Rachel, parents, half-brothers Bill and Jackie, half sister Barbara Diedrich and brother-in-law John Tanck.
Private family services will be held with burial at Hills of Rest Cemetery, Sioux Falls.
