Obituary

Roger Wayne Lamp, 76, of Elkton, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the Flandreau Riverview Healthcare Center just short of his 77th birthday. He was lovingly surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elkton at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Elkton.  Following burial there will be a meal and a time of fellowship at the church.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at the Skroch and Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Elkton from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.

Roger was born to Melvin Lamp and Ethel Pittsenberger on July 21, 1947, Roger lived most of his life in Elkton and was cherished by his family, friends, and the many people he served.

‍He grew up on a farm near Elkton and attended Elkton Public School.  Shortly thereafter, he joined the army and served three tours in the Vietnam War. He remained in the military for 25 years, living in many different states and a couple of different countries during his career. After retiring from the military, Roger obtained a degree from Southeast Technical Institute, worked at John Deere dealership and did some truck driving.

‍On July 14, 1971, Roger married our mother Paulette Ritchie in a quick ceremony because he had to get back to the field.  Ironically, there are no pictures of their wedding because the photographer left the lens cap on the camera and didn't realize it until the wedding was over. Together they raised three children: Sharon (Thomas Landsman), Allison (Troy Kruit), and Jeramie Lamp (Allison).

Some of Roger's hobbies included fishing, farming, and hanging out with family.  He was forever planning fishing outings whenever it worked out and taking with him whoever would go. There are many stories of poles being tangled in the trees, kids losing the whole pole in the lake, and many of us who couldn't put their own worm on the hook.  There was excitement of actually catching fish once in a while.  Roger never had his own farm; but he spent countless hours helping others with their farm and he loved it, especially driving the tractors.  He talked about it all the time.

The residents of Elkton will best remember Roger as the one who tilled gardens, removed snow from driveways, and drove around with his dogs hanging out the window.  After his family, Roger loved his dogs the best.  Many will tell you also that Roger relished the fact that he could give certain people a "hard time" and make them laugh.  He certainly did this with all the nurses who have taken care of him for the past four months.

‍Roger's memory will also be carried on by his adored grandchildren: Alissa (Tyler Fruechte), Ashlyn (Bobby Punt), Amber (Jordan Beck), Abygail (Taryn Krog), Alex Landsman (Abigail), Andrew Landsman, Danial Landsman, Kaden Vugteveen (Kelcy), Kiran Vugteveen, Tyler Kruit (Kameryn), Kali Kruit, Marcus Lamp, Jason Fischer, Kendall Lamp, Jackson Lamp, and Kennedi Lamp; and by his great-grandchildren: Henry, Lucy, Heidi, Claire Fruechte - Thomas, Theodore, Elena Punt - Scott Krog - Weston Landsman -  Bexleigh, Kyler Kruit - and a few more on the way.

‍Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Diane and grandbabies and great-grandbabies who couldn't quite make it to birth.

‍Roger Lamp's story is one of service, love, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. He will be deeply missed, but the seeds he planted in the hearts of those who knew him will continue to grow and flourish for generations to come.
