Roger J. Kontz, 81, formerly of Elkton, passed away at his home in Flandreau on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. He was born April 22, 1927 in Dell Rapids to Julius and Doris (McCarthy) Kontz. He received his education at Dell Rapids St. Mary's and graduated in 1946. Roger farmed with his father until he entered the Air Force in 1951. Following his discharge in 1955, Roger farmed near Elkton. On August 3, 1973 he married Aleen McDowell in Elkton. Roger retired and moved to Flandreau in 1990. He was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Flandreau, former member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Elkton and a 50 year member of the Glen Stafford American Legion Post #198, Elkton.

Roger is survived by two sisters, Shirley (Willard) Froseth, Ft. Collins, CO, Janice (Gilbert) Bruening, Omaha, NE, a sister-in-law, Viola Kontz, Greeley, CO and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harold and nephew, Wayne.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Saturday, January 10th at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Elkton, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation begins at 5:00 pm Friday with a 7:00 rosary at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Elkton.
