On June 30, 2024 Roger Hurley passed away at the Avera Flandreau Hospital with his wife and family at his side. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on July 5, 2024 at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, SD. His Celebration of Life will be held following at 11:00 AM at Second Presbyterian Church in Flandreau, SD.
Roger Hurley was born on October 18, 1940, the oldest child of Lyle and Emma Hurley. He grew up in Flandreau, graduated from Flandreau High School in 1958 and married Carole Grafing on July 30, 1960.
Roger had several jobs in the community with his last job being with the State Highway Department for 25 years. He retired in 2003. During those 25 years he spent many hours plowing snow off state highways.
Roger and Carole lived in Flandreau all their married lives and raised three children: Jeff, Janine and Jill.
He enjoyed trap shooting, fishing, photography and in later years bird watching. He could spot an eagle many miles away and enjoyed checking on the eagle nests in the area.
He was active in Jaycees in earlier years and also an active member of Second Presbyterian Church including serving as janitor for 20 years. He also enjoyed working in maintenance part time at Greenleaf Assisted Living after he retired. He traveled to many hockey and lacrosse games to watch his grandsons play.
He enjoyed camping with his family and friends as their children were growing up. Roger and Carole enjoyed a number of trips throughout the United States and Canada during their retirement years.
Roger was a very kind and gentle man who will be missed by many. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Carole; children, Jeff of Sarasota, FL, Janine (Jamie) Hass of Cape Coral, FL and Jill (Bob) Rejda of Prior Lake, MN. Also grandson, Luke (Lauren) Hass and their children Brynn and Cami of Tucson, AZ; grandson, Andy (Alison) Hass and their children Aidan, Emma and Madelyn of Cape Coral, FL; grandson, Tanner (Kacie) Hass and their children, Gianna, Gage and Griffin Deane of Cape Coral, FL; grandson Alex Rejda of Maple Grove, MN and grandson, Jeremy Rejda of Prior Lake, MN.
