Roberta "Suzie" Ilene Cullen

Roberta Ilene “Suzie” Cullen, 89, of Flandreau, SD, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026 at Avera Flandreau Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, April 6, 2026 at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, SD. The family will be present for visitation prior to the funeral service beginning at 10:00 AM.

Suzie (Roberta) Ilene Halsey, was born June 3, 1936, in Wellfleet, Nebraska. She grew up on a farm with her siblings and loved being outdoors digging in the dirt her entire life. On October 20, 1952, she eloped with the love of her life, James T. Cullen. They ran off together and married in Salina, Kansas, and honeymooned at Niagara Falls.

She loved caring for her large family; she also enjoyed plants and flowers, sewing and other needlework, hummingbirds, canning, and cooking. She truly loved helping others. She loved to hunt with her son, John, and did so up until a year before her passing. Her true passion was attending garage sales, auctions, and collecting cookbooks and “treasures”.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Bud Salsbury (Carol), Michael Anthony Cullen (Betty), Catherine Marie Smallfield (Troy), Carolyn Jean Jewett (Dave), Constance Elaine Stone (Stan), John Patrick Cullen, Christine Cecelia Calanchini (Kevin), Cathleen Ann Bauer (Rob) and Colleen Diane Wede (Andy); grandchildren, Mark (Nikki) and Adam Cullen, Casey (Stephanie) Cory (Lisa), Kyle (Heather) Sampson, Jennifer, DJ (Vicki) and Jessica Jewett (Steve), Shawn, Kim, and Bobby Stone, Chelsea and Caitlin Cullen, Allison Hass and Jordan Calanchini (Emily), Daniel Hahn and Emily Moody (Ky), Gabby and Ella Wede; great-grandchildren, Jack Cullen, Miranda and Haley Sampson, Logan, Marley, and Healani Barboza, Reece and Carson Jewett, Payne Christensen, Rorie Calanchini, Drevyn, Torrah, Everlee and Valerie Hahn, and Olivia and Rowan Moody.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, her wonderful grandson, Justin, daughter Carolyn, son, Michael, granddaughter, Jolene, infant great-grandson, Nash, and her precious great-granddaughter, Paisley. She was also proceeded in death by an infant brother, Loren.
