Obituary

Robert Ernest Locke, age 90, passed away peacefully in his home in Flandreau, SD on March 29, 2022. Bob was born on January 6, 1932, to Isaac and Elsie (Lyng) Locke in Flandreau, SD. He graduated from Flandreau High School in 1950 and attended Macalester in St. Paul for one year and USD in Vermillion for three years, graduating with a degree in Business. Bob married long-time sweetheart Minnie Belle Duncan on July 28 th , 1954. He was in the United States Army in '54-'56 and was an integrated fire control specialist of the Skysweeper Anti-aircraft Gun. Bob also served as an army lifeguard at the base pool. They lived in College Station, TX and Rapid City, SD. After the army, they made their home in Flandreau, SD and from this union they were blessed with three children: Rhonda, Marcia and Janet. Bob joined his father in business at Locke Agency in 1956, became a real estate broker in 1960, and bought the business from Ike in 1962. Bob retired fully in 2018, at age 86. He was involved in Boy Scouts, achieved his Eagle Scout during high school and served as Scout Master for 7 years. Bob was also involved in the Jaycees, the American Legion, Ducks Unlimited, Golf Board, Civic and Commerce, and the Flandreau Improvement Corporation (President 1977). He was instrumental in the creation of Flandreau's Southview addition, Southview Heights, Broad Avenue Mobile Home Park, and Southview Heights City Lots. Bob helped bring these business ventures to town:  Viking Vans, Great Plains, Federal Sewage Grant, Airport, assisted with Motel, Highway 13 Improvement Corp new highway into town, Big Stone Cheese, Industrial Park, Industrial Site developed water, sewer, Cengas contract and road structure with grant, Eaton Dakota, Loiseau Construction, American Energy, HUD Land Acquisition, and first spec building in town. He loved to golf, fish, hunt and watch sports. Bob was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where he was involved in Presbykids, youth advisor, Sunday School teacher, Presbyweds, church choir and he served several times on the Session as Clerk in his role as an Elder.

Bob is survived by his wife Minnie of 67 + years, daughters, Rhonda (Jim) Holbeck, Marcia (Barry) Kooiman, and Janet Locke, along with five grandchildren; Jason (Malia), Bethany (JJ), Nathan (Brianne), Lea, and Bobby (Debbi), and seven great-grandchildren; Avary, Daisy, Alivia, Torin, Haydin, Charlie and Oliver. Bob is also survived by his siblings, Trudy Felix, Margaret West, sister-in-law Charla McNeff, and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, sister Bethel Ann Iverson, son-in-law Terry Riley, and many other family and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 3:00 pm Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Second Presbyterian Church, Flandreau.
