Richard G. Schumacher, 82, of Flandreau died Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Richard was born in Chicago, IL on November 4, 1925 to Fredrick and Isabella (Gushwa) Schumacher. He graduated from Evanston Township High School and then entered the U.S. Navy where he served in the SeeBees. After his discharge, he returned to Evanston in 1947 and was a fireman with the Evanston Fire Department. Dick married Marcella Kitto on July 8, 1947 in Henderson, KY. He retired with the rank of Assistant Fire Chief in 1978. Dick also did construction work part-time. They moved to Flandreau, SD in 1991where they managed the tribal motel until 1993. His wife preceded him in death on January 31, 2007.

Richard is survived by five children: William, Flandreau, Bonnie (Marco) Stegich, Skokie, IL, Richard George, Jr.(Patricia), Evanston, IL, Bruce, Flandreau, and Marcie Ann (John) Redday, Flandreau; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert (Fran) Schumacher, Salisbury, NC. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella, a daughter-in-law, Linda, and his parents.

Funeral Services will be Monday at 10:00 am at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau. Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm Sunday with a 7:00 pm prayer service at the chapel. Funeral Services will be Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 11:00 am at Donnellan Family Funeral Services in Skokie, IL with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie. Visitation will be from 4 - 9 pm Wednesday at Donnellan Family Funeral Services.
