Richard Goldsmith, 64, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at his home under hospice care. He was born April 27, 1946 at Ortonville, MN to Vernon and Gertrude (Diers) Goldsmith. He was raised in Big Stone City and graduated in 1964 from Big Stone City High School. He graduated from Northern State College with a BS degree in teaching in 1969. He continued his education at SDSU until he earned his Master's degree in Administration. Dick married Sue Stern on August 23, 1969 at Ortonville. He joined the SD Army National Guard February 25, 1970 and taught school at Hazel, SD for 10 years, coaching basketball and track. Dick was principal at Castlewood, SD for three years. They moved to Flandreau in 1980 where he was a full time National Guard NCO Training Officer until his retirement on October 31, 2004. He was a member of the Flandreau VFW. Dick loved his family and grandchildren, the Minnesota Vikings and enjoyed golfing, bow hunting, feeding the birds and squirrels and gardening.
Dick is survived by his wife, Sue; a son, Chad (Thresa), Sioux Falls; a daughter, Kelli Knapp, Minneapolis, MN; seven grandchildren, Mason, Miranda, Jessica, Kassidi, Trent, Ethan and Olivia; two sisters, Patricia Delgehausen, Big Stone City and Mary (Francis) Piatz, Browns Valley, MN. He was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Kraus, nephew, Michael Delgehausen and brother-in-law, Gordon Delgehausen.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday at Tabor United Methodist Church, Big Stone City, SD. Visitation begins at 5:00 pm Thursday with the family present from 5 – 7 pm with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau
