Richard “Dick” Duncan passed away Sunday, January 18th, 2026 at Lodi Memorial Hospital in Lodi, CA. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Second Presbyterian Church in Flandreau followed by burial at Union Cemetery also in Flandreau, SD. 

Dick was born in Flandreau, SD to Douglas & Vaneta (Koch) Duncan. His Mother died December 16, 1941 unexpectedly in surgery. After Vaneta passed, he and his brothers, Robert & Lloyd, were raised by their father and step mother Eulah Halseth Duncan on the family farm 7 miles from Flandreau, SD. Richard began his education at Littig Country School, where on occasion he rode a horse to attend. Later the children were bused into Flandreau where he continued his education and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1953. He then enlisted in the Navy and served four years as an Aviation Electrician. After Dick's 4-year term, he attended Dakota State University for two years earning majors in Psychology and Business Education. Richard then reentered the military, in 1959 and attended the United States Aviation School. He was commissioned and designated a Naval Aviator in May, 1961. Thereafter, Richard was transferred to Helicopter Squadron 162 where he trained for combat duty. During his time in college, he met his wife to be, Connie Jean Callan, at Dakota State University. They married a year later in Madison, South Dakota. Soon after, they had two sons, Greg and Douglas. Richard served two tours in Vietnam and one in Okinawa while helping to raise a family. He continued his education at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA where he received his BA Degree. Dick retired from his Marine Corps in 1975 at the Rank of Major. Richard and Connie were married for 63 wonderful years. Oh, and Richard loved to play. His leisure passions were flying, golf, racquetball, tennis, woodworking, church and lazy days watching family sporting events and football. Dick was an Alderman on the Brandon City Council, an elder of his church, VFW, Lions Club, City Development Board member. As well a Franchisee of Coast to Coast Hardware in Brandon, SD and Little Caesars Pizza in Lodi, Stockton and Modesto, CA for 36 years. Richard was preceded in death by parents, Douglas and Vaneta, step mother, Eulah, and brothers, Robert and Lloyd. He is survived by his loving wife Connie; sons, Greg Duncan (Helen, Thomas, Kyle, Sydney) and Douglas Duncan (Patricia); two granddaughters, Victoria Alatorre (Ivan) of Manteca CA, Delaney Duncan of Scottsdale, AZ; two grandsons, Caleb Duncan of Bosie, ID, and Jack Duncan of Modesto, CA; one great granddaughter, Amelia Alatorre of Manteca, CA; two sisters-in-law, Mary Sue Duncan and Anna Duncan; and several nieces and nephews.
