Obituary

Procopia "Copie" Anita Lee, 93, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014. Copie was born in Flandreau on March 18, 1921 to Edwin and Carlotta (Guttierz) Schanandore. She attended school in Flandreau until her sophomore year. Her family then moved to Sioux Falls and she graduated from Washington High School in 1939. Copie attended nursing school at SDSU for one year and then enlisted in the Army Air Corps. She was assigned to Cadre Company in the China, Burma and India Theatre. During her service, she became acquainted with the Flying Tigers who would come to meetings at headquarters in Calcutta. At the end of the war, she married fellow South Dakotan, Delbert Lee, who was in the Army Air Corps. The couple had one son Ronald. Copie remained with the Air Force until 1957 when she returned with Ronald to Flandreau. In Flandreau she became Registrar at the Flandreau Indian School where she worked with her sister. Copie retired in 1985 and moved to Hot Springs with her son who worked as a nurse at the VA Hospital. She continued to live with Ronald until she became ill.

Copie is survived by her son Ronald. She was preceded in death by her sister Mary and two brothers, Edwin and Joe.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Flandreau, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday with a 7:00 pm scripture service and rosary at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau.
