Obituary

Paul N. Felix died Monday, August 20, 2012 at Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota. Felix was born April 22, 1927 to Milton and Elva Jelgerhuis Felix on a farm northeast of Fedora, South Dakota. His schooling included attending a one-room schoolhouse in Carthage, South Dakota, a grade school in Wisconsin, and Fedora High School in South Dakota. He attended USD in Vermillion and earned his Bachelor and Master's degrees in Social Work from Denver University in Denver, Colorado. Paul served in San Diego and China in WWII and in Oak Knoll Naval Hospital during the Korean War, serving as a hospital corpsman and being honorably discharged. After earning his master's degree, Paul was a probation officer in the Hennepin County Home School for Boys. Later, he contributed much to the development of social service programs for the State of South Dakota. He developed the social service department in the Huron Regional Medical Center and received the Dr. Frist Award for his efforts there. Paul was acting director of Family Services in Sioux Falls and Community Counseling in Huron.
Paul was active in church and community, and his life and contribution to the betterment of the lives of those around him will be sorely missed. On September 1, 1950, Paul married Trudy (Gertrude Locke). After retirement, they were volunteers in mission in Texas, Arkansas, and New Mexico for six years until his health caused him to move to Flandreau, South Dakota.

Survivors include wife Trudy; sons Rich (Becky), David (Shavonne), Stanford (Antonia), Bruce (Audrey), and Tony (Sandy); grandchildren Jordan, Jessica, Jennah, Collin, Austin, and Gage; a great-granddaughter Nasahli and a sister Alice Ballweg. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Raymond.

Memorial services will be 10:30 am, Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the Second Presbyterian Church, Flandreau with burial in Union Cemetery, Flandreau.
