Mona J. Miles, 61, died Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Riverview Manor. She was born December 21, 1949 in Flandreau, SD to Leroy and Elaine (Traversie) Miles. She graduated from Flandreau High School in 1968 and attended the National College of Business in Rapid City for one year. Then she worked for the BIA in Minneapolis for five years before moving to Flandreau. Mona worked as a supply clerk at the Flandreau Indian School for many years before retiring in 1998. She then worked at the Royal River Casino as a porter and then in Brookings at Rainbow. Mona was the fifth child of nine and for all who knew her she was strong-willed in her convictions and could be very spirited at times. Mona was a loving and supportive aunt to her nieces and nephews and they kept her young and active. She also enjoyed spending time with friends which centered around food and laughter. She had a great love for all types of music as evidenced by her collection of 500 albums and 800-45s in their original jackets. She never lost her fervor for marching and band music. Mona started playing taps in high school and continued this privilege throughout her life. Her last taps was played December 22, 2010. As the self-appointed family storm-watcher, she was the first to leave an event at the sighting of a dark cloud. She even took the Storm Watching class for her own protection. Mona abhorred shopping so QVC was a god-send from which we all happily benefited. Mona was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Flandreau Alumni Band and was an avid fan of the NY Yankees, Dallas Cowboys and Tiger Woods.
Mona is survived by seven siblings, Denise Goodface, Flandreau, Leslie Anne Tso, Aberdeen, Viola Ross, Flandreau, Roxee Johnson, Flandreau, Renee Jones, St. Paul, Fred (Karen) Jones, Bozeman, MT, Kim (Steve) Patterson, Flandreau and several nieces and nephews. Mona was preceded in death her parents, Walt and Elaine Jones and her brother, Bobby.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau with burial in First Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation begins at 4:00 pm Friday with a 7:00 pm prayer service at the funeral chapel.
