Michael Patrick Roy, 46, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014 at his home in Flandreau, SD. Michael Patrick Roy "Tatanka Yusdohan" (Pulls the Buffalo Skulls) was born on July 28, 1967 to Jerry and Patricia (Taylor) Roy in Minneapolis, MN. He was one of the founding students of the Aim Survival School which today is Heart of the Earth Survival School located in Minneapolis. He moved to Rosebud, SD with his family and attended school there. He graduated from the Circle of Life Survival School on White Earth Indian Reservation in 1986. Mike attended Detroit Lakes Area Vocational Technical Institute, where he received a certificate in culinary arts. He moved to Arizona with his family in 1986 where he used his certificate to work as a cook in several places. Mike moved to Flandreau, SD in 1989 where he continued to reside until his passing. He worked as a Blackjack dealer and Poker dealer at the Royal River Casino for many years. Mike married Merri Rederth in 1992. They had one son Michael Patrick Roy, Jr. in 1993. Mike was a lifelong sundancer and also participated in the Ghost Dance at Crow Dogs Paradise after Wounded Knee 1973. Mike was a member of the Native American Church and the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. Mike was also very proud of his Anishanabe decendency and ate wild rice almost every day. His hobbies were playing cards, cribbage and pinnacle, cooking for his family and spending time with his dear nieces and nephews.
Mike is survived by 3 brothers, Miles Roy, Jean-Paul (Marlene) Roy, Scott (Brooke) Anderson, 2 sisters, Vicki (Joe) Anderson and Leah Fyten, all of Flandreau, many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and takojas. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Jerry and Patricia Roy, 2 brothers, Josh and Ted Roy, 1 sister Jennifer Fyten, his only son Michael Roy, Jr., grandparents Henry and Sylvia Roy, grandfather Ted Taylor, grandmother Ann Flower, 1 uncle, 1 aunt and 1 brother Quanah CrowDog.
Funeral services will be 12:00 noon on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Wicoicaga Otipi Community Center, Flandreau, with burial in First Presbyterian Cemetery. There will be a wake service Sunday evening and a Native American funeral wake service Monday evening all at the center.
