Maxine M. Nichols, 97, passed away Monday, July 6, 2015 at The Brookings Health System. She was born February 27, 1918 in Oseola County, IA to William and Alice (Kraeger) Nichols. They moved to Woodstock, MN and then to a farm near Elkton, SD. Maxine graduated from Verdi High School in 1935. She received her teaching degree from Mankato State Teacher's College and later received a BA from SSU in Marshall. Maxine was a caregiver to her parents for many years. She taught elementary education in country schools in Hendricks, MN, Ward, SD, and then 35 years at Verdi Public Schools, retiring in 1980. Maxine built a cabin at Lake Sylvan near Brainerd, MN, where she enjoyed endless hours of entertaining friends and relatives. She traveled all over the world enjoying Sister Pat as a traveling companion. Maxine was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
Maxine is survived by six nephews, Pat (Ann), Blair, NE, Jim (Joyce) Lake Benton, MN, Bob (Renae), Lake Benton, Tom (Dana), Plymouth, MN, Steve (Stephany), Lake Benton, Kelly (Cindy), Marshall, MN, one niece Shelly (Jerry) Delaney, Lake Benton, and many grand and great-grand-nieces and nephews. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, brother Mike and Sister Pat.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Saturday, July 11, 2015 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Elkton, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Elkton. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Friday with a 7:00 pm Scripture Service at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Elkton, SD.
