Mary E. Peters, 92, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Sioux Falls Dougherty Hospice House. She was born February 8, 1917 in Larchwood, IA to Emil and Gertrude (Tweel) Brakke. Her family moved northeast of Flandreau, SD and she attended Lathrop Country School and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1934. She attended Madison Normal and then taught country school in Moody County. Mary was married to Joseph Peters and they lived in Ward, SD. They moved to a farm southwest of Ward and in 1968 moved into Elkton. They owned and operated the Elkton Rest Home until retiring in 1978. Her husband preceded her in death on December 2, 1985. Mary continued to live in Elkton until July of 2006 when she moved to Greenleaf Assisted Living in Flandreau. Mary was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church and St. Mary's Guild. She enjoyed reading, fishing, playing cards and board games, travelling and going for rides.
Mary is survived by four sons: Chuck (Colleen), Fremont, CA, Tom (Sandy), Elkton, Robert (Candice), Sioux Falls, Richard (Colleen), Lake Oswego, OR; seven daughters: Jean (Bill) Richardson, Buckeye, AZ, Kathy (Verlyn) Oveson, Sioux Falls, Rose (Larry) Nelson, Lake Norden, SD, Mary Lou (Paul) Martinez, Sacramento, CA, Barb Peters, Jacksonville, FL, Carol Collyer, San Ramon, CA and Julie Peters, Sioux Falls; 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Agnes (Merle) Lamp, Garretson, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, two infant daughters, her parents, two brothers and a sister.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Saturday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Elkton, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation begins at 4:00 pm Friday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Elkton with a 6:30 pm prayer service.
