Obituary

Marvin R. Thielen, age 88, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Riverview Health Services in Flandreau lovingly surrounded by his family. He was born July 1, 1925 at Elkton, SD to William and Edith (Ferrie) Thielen. He attended school in Elkton and then began farming. Marvin entered the U.S. Army on November 15, 1944 serving during WWII. After his discharge on March 17, 1946, he returned to Elkton and farming. Marvin married Donna Jensen in Elkton on August 27, 1952, and they continued to farm. Marvin was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, church council, cemetery board and was a 68 year member of Glen Stafford American Legion. He enjoyed golf, travel, boating and RV'ing. Family and friends were very important to him.

Marvin is survived by his wife Donna, six children, Diane (Dan) Stewart, Wausau, WI, Larry (Kristi), Tom (Marla), Judy (Larry) DeZeeuw, all of Elkton, Janine (Pat) Ehlers, Milwaukee, WI, Sue (John) Martin, Palmer, AK, 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one sister Therese (Harold) McMahon, New Prague, MN, and a brother-in-law, Lucian Herold, Boise, ID. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, son Joseph, grandson Neill, two sisters, Rose and Bernadette and three brothers, Ray, Leonard and Gerald. In lieu of flowers, donations to: CASANA (www.apraxia-kids.org) or New Directions Down Syndrome Association (www.newdirectionsdsa.com).

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Elkton with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm scripture service all at the church.
