Obituary

Marvin was born on December 6, 1932 to Ernest and Helena (Wilka) Grotewold in Granite, IA. He grew up in rural Moody County, SD and rural Pipestone County, MN and attended school in Verdi, MN. Marvin married JoAnn McLaren on September 13, 1953 in Flandreau, SD and they lived on a farm at Pipestone, MN. Marvin was in the Army from 1954-1956 and then the Army Reserve for two years. He returned in 1956 and farmed until 1968, when the family moved to Minneapolis. Marvin worked for the Robbinsdale School District as a bus driver, custodian, and mechanic. In 1998, after 30 years, he retired and moved to Flandreau and they spent winters in Texas for 13 years. Marvin loved gardening, mowing lawns, flowers, working on cars and was an avid Jimmie Johnson NASCAR fan. Marvin always had a twinkle in his eyes when he smiled. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and Kelley-Porter American Legion Post #70.

Marvin is survived by his wife JoAnn, Flandreau; three daughters, Becky Grotewold, Flandreau, Kris Grotewold, Walker, MN, Kim Grotewold, Lewisville TX; three grandchildren, Sunshine (Cyrus) Brening, Devils Lake, ND, Joshua Grotewold, Flandreau, Amber Sonsalla, St. Cloud, MN; six great-grandchildren, Dominic, Andrew, Anthony, Elijah, Kaden, Cyrus Jr.; one sister Helen Woelber, Pipestone, MN; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, one brother, Slim, one sister, Marge, granddaughter, Rosemary Ebert, and great-granddaughter, Arianna Rose Brening.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Second Presbyterian Church, Flandreau. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Friday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 7:00 PM prayer service.
