Margery Ella Hendry, 87, formerly of Colman, SD died peacefully with her family at her side on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls. Margery was born June 11, 1924 in Clay County to James J. and May (Dickerson) Young. She grew up in Clay County on the family farm north of Wakonda. She began her education at the Ireland Rural School #54 and graduated from Wakonda High School in 1942. She attended Springfield College for one year and later earned her degree in education from General Beadle College (Dakota State) in Madison while teaching and raising her family. She taught in several rural schools including Hooker Rural near Viborg, Troop, Moore and Whaley north of Colman, eventually teaching 28 years at Colman Elementary. She retired in 1987 after 40 years. She was united in marriage to Darrall D. Hendry on March 2, 1946 at Wakonda. In 1949 they made their home in Colman. In November 2008, she entered the Inn on Westport in Sioux Falls. Marge enjoyed her profession, family, friends, cooking, baking and being active in her community. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, St. Peter Altar Society and Catholic Daughters. She was a lifelong member of St. Peter Catholic Church and her deep faith guided her life. She was also an avid sports fan that involved Colman volleyball, football and basketball teams. She attended as many games as possible. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Marge is survived by two sons; Steve (Lenny) Hendry of Sioux Falls and Colin (Helen) Hendry of Aberdeen, one brother, Ed (Wanda) Young, Wakonda, one sister, Carol (Robert) McMahon of Colton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Marge is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three nephews and one niece.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Friday, September 16, 2011 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman with burial at 2:30 pm at St. Columbkille Catholic Cemetery, rural Wakonda. Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Colman with a prayer service at 7:00 pm.
