Obituary

Lyle W. Croon, 90, died Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls. He was born June 16, 1921 at Hawarden, IA to Onnie and Mildred (Luschen) Croon.They moved near Pipestone in 1926 and in 1929 they moved to a farm southeast of Colman. He attended Docksteader and Kluge Country Schools. Lyle entered the Army on October 20, 1942 and served for 38 months. He was in the European Theatre for 16 months serving in England, France, Germany and Belgium. Lyle married Bernice Van Dam on December 19, 1942 at Cheyenne, WY. He returned to farm after the Army and they moved to a farm west of Flandreau in March 1947 and farmed until 1986 when he retired. They continued to live on the farm until November 1999 when they moved into Colman. Bernice preceded him in death on April 4, 2009. Lyle was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, served 6 years as Clerk of Bell School, was a member of Colman American Legion and later the Dell Rapids American Legion and was a lifetime member of the Flandreau VFW.

Lyle is survived by 4 daughters, Judy Miles, Colman, Carolyn (Robert) Lamberty, Dell Rapids, Joyce (James) Bakkedahl, Las Vegas, NV, Chellie (Randy) Wiese, Madison, SD; 17 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; 1 sister Jean (Dick) Pedersen, Sioux Falls, 2 sisters-in-law Laura Croon, Dell Rapids and Rosie Croon, Colman. He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice, parents, son-in-law Les, great-grandson Levi Miles and 2 brothers Ken and Darrel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 pm Monday, September 5, 2011 at St. Peter Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation begins at 3:00 pm Sunday at the church with a 4:45 pm rosary followed by a 5:00 pm scripture service.
