Lowell D. Salonen, 91, of Colman, SD passed away Sunday, December 12, 2021 at his home. Lowell was born at Castlewood, SD to Oscar and Hilma (Halonen) Salonen on September 12, 1930. He received his education at Lake Norden, graduating in 1948. He attended Coyne Electrical and Radio School in Chicago and then enlisted in the US Navy on April 28, 1949. He was discharged on March 27, 1953 and returned to Lake Norden where he and his brother owned a bowling alley, pool hall and they built a laundromat. Lowell married J. Charmane Olson on June 5, 1954 at Lake Norden. They moved to Colman in 1968 where he was an electrician for Sioux Valley Electric Cooperative until retiring in 1992. He was a member of Colman Lutheran Church, lifetime member of the Sioux Falls VFW and was a master tinkerer.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Charmane; 3 children, Richard (Bonnie) Brookings, SD, Timothy (Patricia), De Smet, SD, Brian (Ruth) Sioux Falls, SD; 8 grandchildren: Nancy, Nicole, Bradley, Leeann, Austin, April, Anjani, Lucas; 20 great-grandchildren: Landon, Owen, Ryder, Griffin, Annabelle, Jonas, Jack, Oona, Nora, Liam, Lucy, Hattie, Henry, Oliver, Everly, Timothy, Nathaniel, Juliette, Kellen, Clayton and a sister, Joyce Jenkins, Indiana. He was preceded by an infant daughter, Leigh Michele, parents, 4 brothers, Les, Willard, Vern, Gordie and 2 sisters, Geneva and Ivadelle.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, December 17, 2021 at the Colman Lutheran Church with burial in the Colman Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Colman.
