Loren J. Smith, 77, passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at his home. Loren was born May 22, 1937 at Flandreau, SD to Roy K. and Hannah (Latham) Smith. He attended Lathrop #44 Country School and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1956. He was a member of the 147th National Guard Unit in Flandreau. Loren married Norma Stein on March 8, 1957 in Flandreau. He raised and fed beef cattle until he retired in 2005. Loren loved his black quarter horses which he used in wagon trains, plowing, cutting hay, parades, weddings and other community events. He also loved following his grandkids and great-grandkids to rodeos. He was a big fan! He was a lifetime member of N.R.A. Loren spent his last day doing what he loved until he put his team away for the day.
Loren is survived by his wife Norma, two children, Cindy Scofield, Volga, Mike (Mindy) Smith, Flandreau, seven grandchildren, Kelly Jo (Kevin) Swartos, Justin Scofield, Lacey Iott, Alexis Smith, Chase Smith, Joshua Pauley, Matthew Pauley, five great-grandchildren, Teagen, Ty, Hannah, Kaden, Colten, and two sisters, Dorothea LaMere and Marilyn Powers. Loren was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law, Sanny and Bob, and nephew Jeff LaMere.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday, September 5, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation is 5 – 7 pm Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, with a 7:00 pm prayer service.
