Wiskur
August 8, 1945 – November 20, 2024
Lois Dianne Wiskur, 79, of Elkton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 AM, Monday, November 25, 2024 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Elkton, SD. The family will be present for visitation from 3:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at Skroch and Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Elkton, SD.
Lois Dianne Wiskur, daughter of Joe and Louise Wiskur was born in Elkton on August 8, 1945. She attended rural school and graduated from Elkton High School. Lois then attended Stewart's School of Hairstyling in Sioux Falls, SD. She was an accomplished cosmetologist for over 40 years.
Pierre, SD was where Lois made her dream come true. With her devotion and skill to making every head of hair look fabulous, a little house became the Scissor Hut. Later, she had the opportunity to move her business to the St. Charles Hotel. After many hair colorings, cuts, styles, and permanents, the Scissor Hut closed in December of 2019.
Lois was actively engaged as a member of the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Assoc., where she earned numerous trophies in hair styling competitions in four states. As an active member of the SD Hairstyling committee since 1965, she was well known for her styling artistry and gave workshops. She was a member and served as President of the SD State Board of Cosmetology where she did school evaluations and salon inspections.
In 1984, Lois was named SD Cosmetologist of the Year. This award was given for contributing the most toward community leadership and the advancement of the beauty profession.
Probably one of her biggest accomplishments was serving on the National-Interstate Council (NIC) as a delegate from SD. Her capabilities earned her several positions at NIC including National President and serving on the Educational Committee to improve knowledge in the cosmetology business. As a member of NIC, Lois traveled to many states for the national meetings and made countless memories with friends from all over. She was also a big contributor to the NIC newsletter publication that took immense work pounding out on a typewriter every couple months.
Lois truly loved living in Pierre. She took many pictures of the Capitol in all seasons, participated in the Pierre Players theater group, had coffee with the best of friends, kept on top of the state's politics, got invited to several Governor inaugural parties, and loved the Capitol Christmas trees. Lois especially loved decorating for Christmas. Ornaments, Dickens Village Christmas pieces, and anything Santa Claus found their way into her shopping bag.
Progression of her Parkinsons had her closing the Scissor Hut and moving out of her little green house in 2019. She then moved to Brookings to be closer to family.
The magnitude of her capabilities as a stylist, businesswoman, and being a member of multiple organizations was exactly the opposite of her rather small physical stature. To quote Lois, "I live in a little house, drive a little car (240 Z Datsun), and have a little beauty salon with a little stylist".
Grateful for having shared her life are her siblings, LeRoy Wiskur, Judy (Mike) Kampmann, John Wiskur, Janice (Mark) Cronin, and David Wiskur (Connie Nelson) all of Elkton, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Louise Wiskur, and siblings, Roger Wiskur, Gayle McKenna, and DeWayne Wiskur.
