Obituary

Lois Margaret Ullom, 88, of Flandreau, passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at Riverview Healthcare Center. Lois was born at home on a farm near White, SD, on Jan. 23, 1932.  The middle child of five born to Willis and Doris (Haber) Tompkins.  When she was five, they moved to the farm in Medary Township, 8.5 miles from Brookings, SD. During her school years, Lois and her siblings walked to Medary #98 Country Grade School, located ½ mile north of the farm, and stayed in town with their grandparents, Albert and Jessie Tompkins, on Medery Ave. in Brookings and walked to the High School. They cooked their own meals. She met Bob at the Lake Campbell roller rink in the summer of 1950. She went roller skating on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday nights during the summer. She did fancy steps that caught Bob's attention and she married Robert G. Ullom Oct. 11, 1953 in Brookings, SD. Lois worked a number of secretarial jobs beginning at Northwestern Bank in Brookings after high school, and then in the Blue Light Law Office above the bakery, and then for Roland Jones during tax season after he bought the business. After that she worked at raising the family and working on the farm. She wouldn't drive the tractors because they didn't have a Fordson like her father, but she took care of the sows and always had a big garden. She worked part-time for Bill Ellingson Law Office in the 70s.

She has been a member of the Second Presbyterian Church since 1948, rarely missing a Sunday, served as Sunday School Superintendent and sang in the choir. Lois was very creative. She enjoyed sewing; knitting; pouring, firing and painting ceramics; hardanger embroidery; and painted many pictures, especially with oils, winning a number of Grand and Reserve Grand Champion ribbons at the Moody County Fair, showing garden produce and art projects each year. She was also interested in genealogy research and tracing the family history. She enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 30 years, but always wanted to go later and return sooner that Bob wanted.

Lois is survived by her husband, Robert; four children, David (Judy), Estherville, IA, Steve (Joan)  Flandreau, SD, Linda (Pat) Thielsen, Chandler, AZ, and Brenda Johnson, Parker, CO; ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Willis and Doris Tompkins, her brother Shirley Tompkins, sister Ila Asmus, and granddaughter Alison Ullom.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, with a visitation beginning one hour prior.
