Lillian A. Tjarks, 98, Flandreau, SD passed away Friday, November 5, 2021 at Riverview Healthcare Center, Flandreau. Lillian was born May 31, 1923 at the Flandreau Hospital to Bernt and Sarah (Hanson) Snuggerud. She graduated from Colman High School in 1941. Lillian moved to Omaha, NE in August 1942 to attend telegraphy school. She worked for Union Pacific Railroad in several areas of Nebraska and Kansas, finally settling in Glenvil, NE. Lillian married Carl Tjarks on June 16, 1946 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil.  She continued to work for Union Pacific until the birth of their first child Lee Ann. They moved to Flandreau, SD in 1949 and starting farming in 1951. Lillian worked at the Flandreau Bakery in 1967 and then in 1968 she began working as a clerk for the City of Flandreau. She became City Finance Officer working for 30 years until her retirement in 1998. Her husband preceded her in death on April 15, 1975 and she moved into Flandreau in August 1976. She continued to live in her home until 2015 when she moved to independent living apartments. Lillian was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, ELCA, and a former member of Clare Lutheran Church. She was a member of Clare Extension Club, Sons of Norway, a past president and lifetime member of SD Finance Officers Association and a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Lillian is survived by three children, Roger (Gina) Tjarks, Bonita, CA; Dale Tjarks, Baltic, SD; Julene (Milt) White, Rapid City, SD; six grandchildren, Paula, Wendy, Thomas, Nicole, Garrett, Brooke; four great-grandchildren, Megan, Kirsten, Taylor, Carson; and two great-great-grandchildren, Alayna and Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl; daughter Lee Ann Roth; and five siblings, Harlan, Luverne, Agnes, Sylvia and Marie.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Wednesday with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau.
