Leon Maifield, 71, died Friday at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Leon was born in Clark County, SD on August 22, 1936 to Arthur and Rena (Thoreson) Maifield. He received his education in a country school north of Willow Lake and graduated from Willow Lake High School in 1954. He enlisted in the US Army where he served for 20 years during the Berlin Crisis and the Vietnam War. He married Gloria Skelton in 1957. Leon was a guard at the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City, MO for 20 years. He later moved to a farm near Willow Lake and then a farm south of Watertown until moving into Watertown in November of 2004. He enjoyed bowling, playing pool, fishing, hunting and pinochle. He is survived by 5 children: Creig O., Watertown; Deann (Merle) Gulbranson, Colman; Arthur P. (Deb), Watertown; Jackie (Chuck) Callahan, Ft. Worth TX; Carrie (Dean) Gardiner, Watertown; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Ruby (Eldon) Herker, Park Rapids, MN and Ardell Fullmer, Bryant, SD. He was preceded in death by parents, an infant brother and a granddaughter, Leah Ann. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:00 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Vienna, SD with burial in Pleasant Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is Monday from 4 – 7 pm at Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
