Obituary

Lawrence "Larry" L. Miles, 72, died Saturday, February 5, 2011 at his home in Dell Rapids. Larry was born March 5, 1938 in Chester, SD to Harold and Evelyn (Birnbaum) Miles. He attended school and graduated from Egan in 1956. Larry married Janice Amdahl on May 27, 1961 in Flandreau and together they had nine children. He was a member of the Army National Guard 147th Field Artillery and was activated in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis. Larry was owner and mechanic of Miles Service from 1963 to 1999. He served as Moody County Commissioner for 12 years. Larry farmed north of Colman from 1972 to 1997. Jan preceded him in death on June 19, 1995. Larry married Mary (Renken) Schmidt on October 10, 1997 in Dell Rapids. They moved to Dell Rapids in 2007. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and a recent trip to Alaska in 2009. Larry's health was impacted by a diagnosis of brain cancer and the affects of its treatment causing a long, hard fought battle of 16 years. Larry was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman. Larry enjoyed life to the fullest as long as he was able and loved his family time with his grandkids. The family would like to thank everyone who helped during his disability especially the V.A.

Larry is survived by his wife, Mary Miles, Dell Rapids; 3 daughters, Monica (Kevin) McMahon, Trent, Pam (Keith) Kepford, Colman, Christi (Mike) Brown, Glyndon, MN; 6 sons, Jeff (Amy) Miles, Dell Rapids, Tony (Kellee) Miles, Dell Rapids, Scott Miles, Colman, Andy Miles, Colman, Jay Miles, Egan, Robert (Holly) Miles, Meade, KS; 2 step-sons, Dennis (Stacey) Schmidt, Brandon, SD, Dean (Sabrina) Schmidt, New Underwood, SD; 24 Grandchildren, Kendra Eng, Kayla McMahon, Kassie, Brock and Karli Kepford, Thomas and Nathan Miles, Megan, Jenna and Gavin Miles, Tyrell, Tell and Mary Miles, Mikaela, McKenzie, and Melayna Brown, Emily Miles, Danielle and Laney Miles, Lane and Jonathan Schmidt, Ethan, Ozella and Joseph Schmidt; 1 great-grandson, Jadon Eng; 1 brother, Lowell (JoAnn) Miles, Hartford, SD; 1 sister, Mary (Jim) LeBrun, Ames, IA; 6 brothers and sisters-in-law, Judy Miles, Colman, Denny (Helen) Renken, David (Judy) Renken, Shirley (Bill) Ruhland all of LeMars, IA, Sharon (Jerry) Neil, Star Prairie, WI, Anita (Larry) Mitzel, Sioux Falls and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Jan; his parents, and his brother, Leslie.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman with burial in the parish cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM Tuesday with a 4:00 PM Catholic Daughter rosary at the church and a 7:00 PM prayer service.
