Obituary

Kent Owen Scofield, 84, of Brookings, SD, formerly of Flandreau, SD passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021 at his home in Brookings. Kent was born September 21, 1937 at Flandreau, SD to Alonzo and Mable (Jensen) Scofield. He attended grade school at Riverview School #70 and graduated in 1951. He graduated from Flandreau High School in 1955. Kent enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees (Construction Battalion) in 1955 and served at Adak in the Aleutian Islands, the Philippines, and Guam. While serving in Guam, he worked on building a munitions and spare parts complex for the new B-52 bomber which was replacing the B-36 bomber at Anderson Air Force Base. Little did he realize that 30 years in the future he would be working with a B-52 in a much different environment. Kent married Joan Ruth Bennett on January 31, 1958 at Pipestone, MN. Joan worked very hard to help send him through college, and he graduated in 1967 with a BS degree in Math. His first job after graduating was with Sperry Univac as a Scientific Programmer and worked on developing software for the Apollo Moon Landing Program. Kent returned to South Dakota in 1969 and was employed at SDSU supporting the Agricultural Extension Service computer systems. While working several years there during this time he wrote the software for the first computerized farm record keeping system in South Dakota under the supervision of Dr. Herb Allen. In 1986 Kent accepted a position with Boeing Military Airplane Company in Wichita, KS. It was here where he would work with the B-52 bomber once again. Kent helped develop and write software for the B-52 Offensive Avionics System and Cruise Missile Integration (OAS/CMI) program. Also, during the time he spent at Boeing, he was the lead software engineer of several other engineers in the development of avionics software for the first prototype of the Bell/Boeing V-22 Osprey tilt rotor aircraft. Today there are several hundred V-22s flying with the U.S. Marines and other branches of the service. In 1991 Kent returned to South Dakota and accepted a position as Information Systems Coordinator with Orion Food Systems in Sioux Falls and retired after 17 years with Orion. Kent was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Flandreau, and served on the church council. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, hiking and vacations. Kent loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all equally, all unconditionally, and with all his heart.

Kent is survived by his wife Joan; four children, Timothy, Flandreau; Sherrian Uhrig, Sioux Falls; Todd (Kerrie Faanes), Flandreau; Cory, Brookings; nine grandchildren, Tiffany, Adam, Kyle, Jake, Brandon, Kaila, Kendra, Brittany, Skyler; 11 great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Lucas, Clara, Asher, Carmen, Addeyson, KodaKae, Alexis, Bristal, Grace, Brantley; and his brother Gary (Kris) Scofield, Fargo, ND.
