Obituary

Kenneth Edwin Leuning, 71, passed away peacefully Friday, November 21, 2014 at Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, Tucson, AZ. He had been admitted to the VA Hospital on September 15th after his cancer treatment for throat cancer, and the cancer moved to his lungs and back. He entered hospice on November 4th. Ken was born on November 29, 1942 to Edwin and Ethel (Jacobson) Leuning in Dell Rapids, SD. He attended grade school, Juve #17, and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1960, and then joined the Air Force May 31, 1960, honorably discharged in 1963. He went to IBM school in Omaha, NE in 1964, graduated and moved to Wichita KS and worked for Lear Jet. After Dad died in 1966, Ken tried his hand at farming, but it wasn't for him. Ken moved to Phoenix, AZ and took up carpentry. In 1973 he moved to Tucson and continued building until he retired in 2010. He retired because of glaucoma. Ken loved to watch football. Ken had two favorite teams the 49ers and whoever was playing the Cowboys. He also loved the University of Arizona Wildcats. Ken loved to keep stats on the teams, played Sudoku and crossword puzzles.

Ken is survived by three sisters, Janice Leuning, Mitchell, SD, Brenda May, Tucson AZ and Jeanne (Stuart) Benson, Flandreau, SD; nieces and nephews, Scott (Candy) Bollinger, Lori (Frank) Dailey, Mike (Andrea) May, Steve (Amy) May, Amy (Brian) Swenson, Tracy Schmidt, Kylie (Ryan) Rydell; great-nieces and nephews and also his special friends in Tucson, Denise, Elena, Linda and Jack, Ann and Dan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed in 1966 and Ethel in 2009.

Services will be 10:00 am Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Messiah Lutheran Church, rural Flandreau,with burial in Logan Reformed Cemetery, rural Dell Rapids, SD.
