Obituary

James L. Schaap, 71, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2015 at his home under hospice care. Jim, beloved adopted son of Andrew and Letha (Reitnauer) Schaap, was born on March 22, 1944 in Sioux Falls, SD. He attended Baltic Public School and graduated in 1962. He then started farming south of Baltic. Jim married Judy Gilpin on January 25, 1963 at Pipestone, MN. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1970 and he started selling life insurance. They moved to Flandreau in August 1977 and operated a greenhouse and flower shop for several years. Jim had a liver transplant in 2000. They moved to Colman, SD in 2001 until May 2015 when they moved to Sioux Falls. He loved growing plants, especially cactus and orchids, and enjoyed football. Jim was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Flandreau, where he was an elder and trustee, former member of the Flandreau Flier Booster Club and was very involved with the Orchid Association in Sioux Falls for many years.

Jim is survived by his wife Judy, Sioux Falls, three children, Jodi (Pat) Huggins, Geddes, SD, Janine (Dan) Bunjer, Arco, MN, Jim (Jessica) Schaap, Sioux Falls, 10 grandchildren, Brenden Hahn, Hope Johnson, Dylan Huggins, Austin Huggins, Konnor Schaap, Alyssa Hahn, Trevor Hahn, Ashton Schaap, Mara Schaap, Jordy James Schaap, and six step-grandchildren, Brielle Dixon, Sam Dixon, Uriah Dixon, Elizabeth Bunjer, Catherine Kuehl and Caroline Bunjer. Jim was preceded in death by his parents.


Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Second Presbyterian Church, Flandreau, with burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Sioux Falls. Visitation will be 5 – 7 pm Monday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, with a 7 pm prayer service.
