Howard Myers, 83, died Monday, January 19, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Howard was born on July 20, 1925 at Flandreau to Elmer and Emma (Bruening) Myers. He was educated in a Moody County country school and graduated from Ag School in Brookings in 1944. Howard served in the Marines from 1944 until 1946. During his time in the Marines he was wounded in Okinawa at Sugar Loaf Hill and received a Purple Heart. On June 25, 1946 he married Helen Walsh in Elkton. He worked for Myles Klosterman for one year and then moved to Milwaukee, WI where he was a mechanic for 8 years. They returned to Elkton in 1954 and opened Myers Standard Station where he operated it for 46 years until retiring in 2000. Helen preceded him in death on September 25, 1987. Howard enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards, dancing, bowling and visiting with people. Howard was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, a member of the Elkton Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years, Glen Stafford American Legion Post #198, Elkton, Elkton City Council, Elkton Community Club and the Improvement Corporation.
Howard is survived by 7 children, Dan (Kay), Milwaukee, WI, Steve (Vikkie), Elkton, Connie (Bill) Biggar, Traverse City, MI, David (Janet), Elkton, Kevin (Shari), Elkton, Tony (Kammi), Grand Junction, CO, Tom (Julie), Hartford; 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and special friend, Doris Haugen, Flandreau. He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen; parents; grandchildren, Joshua Myers, Tina Biggar, Mathew Biggar and sister, Evelyn Stuefen.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10:00am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Elkton with burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, Elkton. Visitation will begin Thursday at 4:00pm at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church with a 6:00pm scripture service.
