Harvey Ross, 90, died Friday, April 17, 2009 at his home in Flandreau. Harvey was born on March 10, 1919 along the Keya Paha (Turtle Hills) River on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation to Edward and Harriett (Frazier) Ross. He was rounded up and taken to the Rosebud Boarding School where he received instruction in the 4 R's in the morning, various trades in the afternoon and military drills in the evenings. Harvey met Agnes Allen in 1936 and married her on December 23, 1939 in Valentine, NE. He worked in Buffalo, NY for a year then in St. Louis, MO for a year. Harvey joined the Army and was assigned to General Patton's 5th Army. He fought in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia during WW II. After the war he farmed in Flandreau until he was injured and then went to work for the US Government on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation where he retired with 20 years of service. Agnes preceded Harvey in death on April 6, 2000. He resided in Flandreau until his death.
Harvey is survived by 4 sons, Dr. Allen (Dorothy), Denver, CO, Dr. Kenneth (Lourdes), Albuquerque, NM, Duane (Janet), Holbrook, AZ, James, Flandreau; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Rose (Lawrence) Posey, Oakland, CA, Olive Clairmont, Mission, SD and Dolly LaPointe, Rosebud, SD. He is preceded in death by his wife; parents; 3 brothers, George, Don, Leo and 2 sisters,Jeannette and Alma.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 10:00 AM at the Flandreau Community Center with burial at First Presbyterian Cemetery, Flandreau. Visitation will begin Monday at 4:00 PM at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 7:00 PM prayer service. An all night wake will continue at 8:30 PM at the Flandreau Community Center.
