Glen Eneboe Leraas, 87, died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Riverview Manor, Flandreau. He was born April 14, 1921 in Lincoln County, SD to Carl M. and Anne Sophia (Eneboe) Leraas. He joined two siblings, Russell and Dorothy. Their mother died in May, 1922 so three of Carl's sisters took care of the household and children until June, 1926 when Carl married Emma Thorson. Glen spent his early years on the Lincoln County farm and received his first years of elementary schooling in Highland Rural School south of Canton, SD. When he was 8 years old the family moved to a farm north of Colman, SD and he continued his education in Midway Country School. Glen's father was in failing health and after several years of illness died in November, 1933. With the help of a hired hand Glen, Russell and their stepmother continued to handle the farming operation. Glen graduated from Brookings High school in 1939 and moved to California to work at North American Aircraft Company in Los Angeles until he entered the Army in 1942. He went overseas and took part in three major battles in the European Theatre of World War II. The first and biggest battle being the Battle of the Bulge. After being discharged in 1946, he returned to the Colman area and was united in marriage to Doris Luedemann on February 5, 1947 in Colman. They moved to the Eneboe Homestead south of Canton, farming there until 1958 when they bought a farm north of Colman farming at that location until 1966. After renting out the farmland, Glen started working for the State Department of Transportation, Madison office, retiring from that position in 1983. Glen was a confirmed member of Midway Lutheran Church, was an usher, a member of the men's Bible class and held various offices in the church. Glen was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the American Legion as well as being a life time member of the Railsplitters, 84th Infantry Division. He was a member of the SD State NRA rifle team and competed in the National Rifle Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio and also was an NRA Hunter Safety Course instructor, both in Lincoln and Moody counties. Glen was a dedicated fisherman and looked forward to spending many winters in Port Aransas, TX fishing in the ocean as well as spending many wonderful summer fishing trips in Minnesota at the home of his niece, Mary Ann and Jim Kath and family.
Glen is survived by his wife, Doris, Flandreau; two sons, Ron and fiancée, Sue, Wylie, TX; and Gordon and fiancée, Jane, Colman, SD; five grandsons, Mike (Angie), Mark (Sarah), Chad (Tamara), David (Melissa) and Nathan (Jaime); seven great-granddaughters; one niece, Mary Ann Kath; one nephew, Carl Leraas; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Leraas and Ellie Luedemann and two brothers-in-law, K.M. Wood and R.W. Harrington. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Emma Leraas Hasvold, sister, Dorothy Eirenberg and brother, Russell.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau with burial in Midway Lutheran Cemetery, Colman. Visitation begins at 2:00 pm Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with the family present from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.
