Gladys L. Bell, 91, died Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Riverview Manor. Gladys was born on February 4, 1918 on the family farm northwest of Flandreau to Justus and Florence (Church) Arms. She attended and graduated 8th grade at a country school outside of Flandreau. Gladys then attended parochial school in Mitchell for 1 year. Gladys married Clifford Nelson in 1935 and 2 sons were born to this union, LeRoy and Dwaine. They farmed in the Flandreau area. Clifford preceded her in death on January 27, 1973. Gladys worked at Riverview Manor as a cook. On February 14, 1976 she married Alvin Bell in Flandreau. Alvin preceded her in death on January 20, 1997. Gladys then made her home at the Riverview Apartments in Flandreau. She began spending the winter's in Arizona starting in 1999. Gladys enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, cooking, watching and feeding the birds and taking care of her plants. She was a lifetime member of both the United Methodist Church and Busy Bee Club.
Gladys is survived by 2 sons, LeRoy (Barbara) Nelson, Brookings, Dwaine (Alise) Nelson, Colorado Springs, a stepdaughter, Barbara Teets, CA, stepson, Richard Bell, Canada, 6 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-great-grandchildren and a niece, Arlyce Derdall, Flandreau. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clifford and Alvin, parents, a sister, Evelyn Pulscher and a brother, Les Arms.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Flandreau, with burial in the Colman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Wednesday at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
