Obituary

Geneva Marie (Kettering) Hogue, 96, passed away after a brief illness March 8, 2022 in Brookings, SD. Geneva was born June 6, 1925 to Alice (Johnson) and Harold B. Kettering in Aberdeen, SD. The family lived on a farm near Mellette, SD and then moved to a farm near Brentford. She attended Brentford School where she was a basketball athlete, graduating in 1943. While playing basketball, an opponent from the Warner men's team caught her eye. She was scolded by her bus driver on more than one occasion, as she stayed too long in the gym post-game for a little harmless flirting. After graduation, Geneva went to Aberdeen Business College and worked for OPA, Milwaukee Railroad and Northern State College. She married that opposing basketball player, Jerome O. Hogue, on Nov. 26, 1944. They lived in Aberdeen while Jerome attended college then moved to Vermillion so he could complete his law degree. There she worked for USD. They chose the lovely little community of Flandreau as their home, opened a law practice, built a home and enjoyed a great many years raising three kids on a hill near the swimming pool. Not a nurse by nature, Geneva had to rise to that level as not every bicyclist racing down that hill made it successfully to the swimming pool. In the late 70's, Jerome and Geneva built a home south of Flandreau. Here she had a large garden of flowers and vegetables and planted a full shelterbelt. Geneva planted a variety of over 60 trees on her acreage and Jerome got to mow around every single one. Total strangers were known to pull into Geneva's yards to admire her gardening efforts. She was employed at the ASCS office, Moody County Enterprise and the Second Presbyterian Church. In addition to gardening, her passions were bird watching, golf, crossword, the stock market, politics, antiques, SDSU sports and the environment. She moved to Meadow Green in Brookings in 2007, shortly after Jerome's death. She made many new friends, including Harold Bailey. They spent years enjoying each other's company, attending music, church and sporting events. There wasn't a pancake breakfast they didn't like. Geneva was a member of PEO, Athena Literary, Questors, Second Presbyterian Church (deacon, elder, trustee) and 1 st Methodist Church.

Survivors include her children, Calla (Mark Kelsey) Hogue, Brookings; Colin (Laura) Hogue, Anoka, MN, Alisa Hogue, Warner, SD; along with her grandchildren Quinn (Jake Hansen), Austin (Jodie) and Jae Kelsey; Garret (Alaya) Hogue; Connor, Parker and Bess Seaman; her sister Mary Francis Winkle (Tampa) and sister-in-law Jean Kettering (Sun City West). Preceding her in death are her husband, Jerome, twin brothers, Dwight and Dwayne, young brother, John Robert and sister Betty Clemensen as well as her parents.

On Saturday, March 12, 2022 at the Second Presbyterian Church in Flandreau there will be a visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 am, service at 11:00 am, followed by a yummy lunch. Geneva wished memorials be directed to the Geneva Kettering Hogue and Jerome O. Hogue SDSU Scholarship Fund or the Humane Society.
