Flandreau-Geneva M. Ekern, 93, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2015 in Flandreau. Geneva was born to Martin and Gyda (Carlson) Lee on August 8, 1922 in Lennox, SD. The family moved to a farm east of Flandreau, SD in 1935. Gen graduated from Flandreau High School in 1940. She married LuVerne (Corky) Ekern on May 28, 1942 in Flandreau, SD. They moved to California where LuVerne worked in a shipyard before entering the U.S. Army in 1943. They were stationed in Florida for a time before Corky was sent to serve in the European Theater. After his discharge, they returned to Flandreau in 1946. Gen was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, WELCA, Bible Study, and Circle. She was also a member of Sons of Norway, Athena Literary Club, VFW Auxiliary, Bridge Club, and was an avid golfer. Because of her love of music, Gen directed the church choir and through the years taught piano to many students.
Gen is survived by four children, son Mark (Sandy) Ekern, Flandreau, grandson Scott (Susan) Ekern, great-grandchildren, Megan, McKenzie and Miranda, granddaughter Stacy (Brian) Prisbe, great-grandsons, Ben and Sam; daughter Nancy (Ron) Carlsrud, Flandreau, grandson Jacob; daughter Susan (Jim) Jepsen, Flandreau, grandson Wes (Leah); son David (Val) Ekern, Brookings, granddaughter Samantha Headrick (Steve Schepel), great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Carson, granddaughter Pam Ekern (Sam Schaapveld); special family friend Leanne Tammen, Sioux Falls, and many nieces and nephews. Gen was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter Debra, her parents, three brothers, Kenneth, Lorraine, Bob and two sisters, Eleanor and Elvera.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, October 30, 2015 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation is 5 – 7 PM Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 7 pm prayer service. Memorials to ACS.
