Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Rahn died Saturday, November 20, 2010 at Riverview Manor, Flandreau. Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Rahn was born in Flandreau, SD to Richard V. and Nellie Mae (Duree) Fadgen. She was raised on a farm south of town and has always had the land as part of her heart. Elizabeth attended Liberty Country School #43 and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1943 where she was Homecoming Queen. She worked at Sharon Shop dress store in Sioux Falls and attended and graduated from USD in Vermillion with a degree in Social Work and Education. Elizabeth was an active Chi Omega and was president of the house. After graduating she taught high school English in Hartford, SD, Anthon, IA and Estelline, SD. Elizabeth married Kenneth W. Rahn on November 18, 1950 in a double ceremony with her sister. After Ken's injury in the Korean War, they moved to Battle Creek, MI while Ken received care at Percy Jones Army Hospital. Her students in Estelline took up a collection to send her to Battle Creek to be with Ken. Once they returned to Flandreau, Elizabeth was active in the GFWC/Athena Club, PEO, OES, Royal Neighbors and Town and Country Club. She was a member of the UMW, Daughters of the Nile, DAV Auxiliary, Retired Enlisted Association Auxiliary, and the Flandreau United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher. Elizabeth always had a passion for education. Over the years, Betty assisted students with writing for scholarships. Her other passion was her husband and family. Family trips were filled with the enjoyment of learning. Betty chose to be home with her children as they grew up. An avid reader of all types of literature, Betty was always informed on topics and shared anything she found with anyone that needed it. She was generous, kind, intelligent and always a lady.
