Edward William Kramer, age 91, died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at his son's home, rural Flandreau.Edward was born May 2, 1921 two miles south of Lone Tree in Moody County to George F. and Anna C. (Hemmer) Kramer. At age 5 Ed moved with his family to a farm near Chester and started school at Pleasant Valley School. His family moved near Colman and a couple years later to a farm southeast of Flandreau where he continued his education in various country schools in Moody County. In 1931 Ed started working outside the family farm. Ed did farming by horses and would harness two to six horses a day every day except Sundays. Ed joined the US Army and was put in the 937 Army Engineers. He served in the European Theater, landing on Omaha Beach 7 days after D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Belgium and Germany. He returned to the family farm in 1946. On February 23, 1952 Ed married Evelyn M. Anderson at St. Joseph's Cathedral Church in Sioux Falls. Ed and Evelyn purchased the family farm in 1963 and in 1972 they bought the adjoining farm from Thomas Hart. Ed and Evelyn moved into Flandreau on May 1, 1990 and their son Les and his wife reside on the family farm. They continued to help on the farm, garden and raise livestock. Evelyn preceded him in death on October 20, 2007. Ed enjoyed traveling and farming. Ed was a lifetime member of the VFW, a past board member of the Sioux Valley Electric and Grovena Township board and past vice chairman of Big Sioux Rural Water.
Ed is survived by two sons, Leslie and his wife, Renae and Roger and his wife, Lisa, all of Flandreau; one grandson, Kassidy Doyen-Kramer; 6 siblings, George Kramer, Rochester, MN, Louis Kramer, Sioux Falls, Margaret (Harold) Weins, Sioux Falls, Norbert (Marge) Kramer, Sioux Falls, James Kramer, Chamberlain, Mary (Virgil) Myers, Flandreau and several nieces and nephews. Ed is preceded in death by his wife; parents and three brothers, John Kramer, Thomas Kramer and Sam "Francis" Kramer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 10:30 AM at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Flandreau with burial at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday beginning at 3:00 PM with a scripture service at 7:00 PM at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau. Memorials can be made to Avera Dell Rapids Hospital.
