Edith Irene Sorensen, age 90, of Flandreau, South Dakota, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Edie, as most people called her, was born June 10, 1920, in Appleton, Minnesota, the daughter of Lynn and Hazel (Dexter) Wilkins. As an infant, she moved with her parents to Trent, South Dakota. Later, they moved to a farm northwest of Trent where Edie went to Egan Consolidated School for 10 ½ years. The family then moved northeast of Flandreau and Edie continued her education at Flandreau High School, graduating in 1939. On May 31, 1940, she was united in marriage to Leo Stephenson in Pipestone, Minnesota. To this union two children were born, Lynn and Judith. Leo was stricken with pneumonia and died in 1944. Edie then married Raymond W. Sorensen on December 31, 1945, in Pipestone. To this union two children were also born, Roderick and Larry. They lived on a farm northwest of Flandreau for one year and then moved southeast of town and farmed the Siep farm until purchasing the Carlson farm in Alliance Township in 1957. Edie was a stay at home mother until the early 1960's when she started working part time at Urban Jewelry and Gift in Flandreau. Edie enjoyed baking, going to her children's school activities, and playing cards. Edie was a member of the Moody County Rustlers, Athena Club, 2nd Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder and Trustee, and P.W. She was a 4-H Leader and served on the Sioux Valley REA Board. In 1977, Edie and Ray moved into Flandreau and Edie continued to help at the jewelry store for a few years. They moved to Greenleaf Assisted Living in February 2009.
Edie is survived by her husband, Ray; four children, Lynn and Linda of Alton, IA, Judith Wilson of Lexington, TN, Rod and Karen of Sac City, IA, and Larry and Gina of Flandreau, SD; nine grandchildren: Shelly (Will) Miller, Stacey Mize, B.J. Wilson, Stephannie (Brian) Williams, Michael Sorensen, Aaron Sorensen (Erin Alfs), Sara, Shane, and Seth Sorensen; six great grandchildren: Raven Wilson, Kaelyn Parish, Ethan Sorensen, Megan Mize, Tatum Sorensen and Rayanna Williams; and a sister-in-law, Iva Erickson of Flandreau. Her parents and two sisters, Addie Houser and Foy Powers preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Second Presbyterian Church with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 pm Tuesday at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
