Obituary

Dwayne Arthur Myers, 80, of Elkton, SD, passed away in his family home in Elkton on April 4, 2017, under the loving care of a trusted neighbor and hospice. Dwayne was born October 11, 1936, in Elkton, SD, to Arthur and Ellen (Larsen) Myers. Dwayne had an older brother, Don. He graduated from Flandreau High School in 1954. Dwayne married Sharron Anderson of Elkton in 1955 and they had a daughter, Sandy in 1956, and later divorced in 1968. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and then attended South Dakota State College in Brookings, SD, where he graduated with a Masters Degree in Agricultural Engineering. After college, Dwayne, Sharron, and Sandy moved around the country with Dwayne working for the BLM in Montana and Washington, DC, as a land appraiser; in Montana and Wyoming as a cattle buyer and livestock rep; for Exxon and Sinclair as a landsman in Chicago and Virginia; and then settled in Colorado working in private real estate management. Dwayne married Helen Zarb-Cousin in the late 1970's. They resided in Colorado Springs, CO, along with her youngest children, Brigette and Garrett. Dwayne and Helen divorced and he returned to the family farm in 1984. Refusing to retire, and to combat boredom during the winter, Dwayne toured the country truck driving. He finally decided to live at the farm full-time and retired in 2012.

Dwayne loved horses and became an avid polo player while living in Colorado. He started playing Cowboy polo, winning many awards for his position. He then moved onto English polo and continued playing throughout his life. He played polo from Wyoming to Wisconsin and Oklahoma to Canada. He sincerely enjoyed meeting people and believed in including everyone in the game, no matter their skill level. He served as the club delegate in CO, and was president of the Sioux Falls Polo Club. He truly loved his horses and always had a bucket of treats on hand. His trusted companion these last couple of years was Oranges (named by his granddaughters), that would only come running when Dwayne called out "Cat!" Even to the last days, Oranges vigilantly checked on his friend.

Dwayne is survived by his daughter, Sandy (Butch) Parks, of Colorado and Wyoming; stepdaughter, Brigette Trabits, and her daughters, Jacqueline and Gabriella, Morongo Valley, CA; stepson, Garrett (Liza) Parten and family, Blaine, MN; stepdaughter, Gigi (Danny) Collins and family, Lake Elsinore, CA; Helen Zarb-Cousin, Lake Elsinore, CA; Sharron Myers, Denver, CO; Oranges the cat; and his trusty steeds.

Services will be at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Elkton on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 1:00 p.m., with burial in the Elkton City Cemetery.
