Obituary

Duane D. Duncan, 81, of Flandreau, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020 at Ava's House in Sioux Falls, SD. Duane was born June 9, 1939 in Flandreau, South Dakota, the son of Leo and Faye (Claussen) Duncan. Duane grew up and attended school in rural Flandreau and Flandreau High School.

As a young man Duane farmed with his uncle, Duane Claussen, worked for Albert Moore and also worked construction in the Flandreau area. In March of 1960 he went to work for Park Grant in Brookings, SD. This is where he met his wife. Duane and Joanne were married on October 22, 1960 at the United Methodist Church in Brookings.

They lived for just a short time in Flandreau while Duane worked for Case Schipper and Albert Moore. In December of 1962 they moved to Sioux Falls. Duane was employed at Dakota Express and Midwest Coast as an over the road driver for 10 years. He then went to work for American Freight as a refrigeration mechanic for 15 years. Next, he worked for Canfield's for 6 years doing systems furniture installations. In 1990 Duane transferred to Pierre. In 1994 Duane and Joanne started their own systems furniture installation business.  Duane retired in 2001. After retiring they traveled spending winters in Arizona and Texas.

While living in Pierre, Duane did his share of hunting and fishing. He took great pride teaching his grandsons to fish and hunt. Together they caught many walleyes and shot their share of geese. Duane was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved to fish, hunt and later he enjoyed helping the neighbors during harvest.

Duane is survived by his wife, Joanne; three daughters: Dawn (Kelly) Hooker of Sioux Falls, SD, Teresa (Eric) Boysen of Sioux Falls, SD and Lisa (James) Luttrell of Glenwood, IA; one son, David (Mary) Duncan of Grand Junction, CO; nine grandchildren: Cory (Megan) Hooker, Cassandra (Matt) Dawley, Garrett (Emily) Boysen, Lucas (Karissa) Boysen, Zachary (Sarah) Elkins, Jordan (Taylor) Elkins, Katherine Duncan, Jacob Duncan, and Claire Duncan; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Todd Duncan, parents, brother, and parents-in-law.
