Dorothy Jeanne Newcomer, age 84, died at Riverview Manor Nursing Home on Thursday, December 24, 2009. She was born in Flandreau, SD on January 7, 1925 to Clarence and Eunice (Ramsdell) Hanson. She grew up on a farm in southeast Moody County and attended Jules School through the 5th grade. Her family moved into Flandreau and she attended Flandreau High School. Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, Eugene Newcomer on November 13, 1941 in Slayton, MN. Eugene, fondly called "Newky", resided in Pipestone, MN, but he and Dorothy met when in the 8th grade and were together all through their high school years. After their marriage, they moved to St. Paul, MN where they lived until the outbreak of WWII when "Newky" was called to serve his country. Dorothy and family returned to Flandreau until "Newky" was honorably discharged from the Navy Seabees. Dorothy worked for her father at Hanson's Furniture Store and was also employed at Westside Grocery. Eventually both Dorothy and her husband worked at 3M in Brookings, SD. Her husband preceded her in death on January 14, 1978. Dorothy retired from 3M in 1990. Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her family and friends and had many hobbies including flower and vegetable gardening, spending time at the lake, painting, sewing and quilting. She loved animals and going to Methodist Quilters every week.
Dorothy is survived by daughter, Deanna (Harvey) Baldwin, Sioux Falls; son, Randy (Mary), Mitchell; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and a very special niece, Rosemary Jaacks. She was preceded in death by her husband; 2 sons, Denis and Terry; daughter, Sandy; a granddaughter; her parents and brother, Donald Hanson.
Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the United Methodist Church, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
